- BORLAND ANNOUNCES REFLEX PLUS Powerful New Macintosh* Relational Database for
- Corporate Users
- SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - Borland International, Inc. announces Reflex Plus, the
- new fully relational database management system software designed for corporate
- Macintosh users. The second generation to Borland's Reflex for the Mac, Reflex
- Plus offers increased power, flexibility, functionality, and ease of use.
- Reflex Plus is a high-powered relational database manager that takes advantage
- of the Macintosh's superior graphical interface while providing users with
- flexibility in creating databases, accessing data, and producing reports.
- Easy-to-use entry forms, online help, and predefined software templates
- streamline database design and reporting with Reflex Plus.
- Database design in Reflex Plus is simplified with the choice of an entry form
- that shows either one record at a time or all records at once in a tabular view
- format. Report design is streamlined with new functions such as GROUPBY, which
- shows records grouped by values in common. Automatic formulas for "power
- searching" and data manipulation can be quickly defined with the Paste Choice
- command. Paste Choice copies the field with its attributes from one database
- into another entry or report form, to eliminate duplication of field design by
- the user.
- Reflex Plus's 55 built-in functions combine the number crunching power of
- spreadsheets with the easy-to-use visual orientation of the Macintosh. Entry
- forms support calculated fields, to automatically perform any type of
- mathematical calculation during data entry.
- According to Louise Stanley, Macintosh marketing manager at Borland, "Corporate
- database users don't want to learn programming in order to use a powerful
- database. We've combined the simple visual orientation that Reflex for the Mac
- was known for wi th high- powered enhancements and greater efficiency. Reflex
- Plus lets business users set up their database applications quickly and easily
- so that they can use their time where they need to-- on their business."
- Product Background
- In contrast with flat-file databases that let the user create and use only one
- database at a time, Reflex Plus allows the user to organize and sort data in
- virtually unlimited ways. Files are linked simply by using the Macintosh mouse
- to draw a line between them on the screen. In addition to extensive
- context-sensitive help, Reflex Plus includes an example report on disk providing
- a demonstration of available functions as it calculates a sample report.
- Databases created with Reflex for the Mac are upward compatible with Reflex
- Plus. Reflex Plus' documentation has been rewritten and expanded to include two
- volumes -- a comprehensive tutorial designed for novice users, which offers
- practical information on relational databases and walks the user through
- step-by-step design examples, and a complete user reference manual. A special
- "cookbook" chapter of nine modifiable software templates for common business
- applications allows users to get started quickly with their databases.
- Templates include:
- o mailing labels
- o sales contacts database
- o a checkbook
- o time billing
- o inventory
- o stock portfolio
- o amortization schedules
- o parts explosion
- o genealogy database
- Reflex Plus supports larger record sizes, and users can select record sizes of
- 1,000, 2,000, or 4,000 characters. Font selection is limited only by printer
- support.
- Reflex Plus is fully compatible with the entire Macintosh family, including the
- Macintosh Plus, Macintosh SE, and Macintosh II. It supports the Hierarchical
- Filing System, Switcher, and most hard disks, as well as the ImageWriter* and
- LaserWriter* printers.
- Reflex Plus is not copy protected.
- With a suggested retail price of $279.00, it will be available the third
- quarter of 1987. -----------------------------
